The Basics of a Washington D.C. Traumatic Brain Injury
A Washington D.C. traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a serious type of injury that can leave you or a loved one with a lifetime of complications. Nearly one million people in America each year are seen by medical doctors who have suffered some type of blow to the head. Many of these victims suffer a TBI.
What is a TBI?
A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an injury to the brain resulting from an external force, such as a car accident. A TBI can lead to temporary or permanent impairment of cognitive, physical, and psychosocial functions.
Three common causes that can result in a TBI
A TBI can result when the brain sustains:
Tearing: When the brain is suddenly thrown forward, then backwards, the wires in your brain which make your brain work can be torn. Your brain has a similar consistency of Jell-O, making it sensitive to sudden jolts. Also, sudden blows to the head can result in tiny web-like cracks, resulting in a tear. Unfortunately, many of these tears may not show up in a CT scan or MRI.
Bruising: A blow to the head can result in bleeding in the brain. Your skull does not expand allowing room for this extra blood. Therefore, the blood will begin to press on softer portions of your brain, such as brain tissue, resulting in bruising. Critical areas of your brain can cease to work and can result in a life or death situation.
Swelling: Just about any injury to your body can result in swelling. Swelling occurs when your body produces agents and sends them to the injured area. Again, since your skull does not expand, there is no room for these additional agents. The pressure built up can result in brain damage.
If you suffer a blow to the head, no matter how slight the blow is, it is imperative that you seek medical attention immediately. In many instances, TBI symptoms don’t reveal themselves right away. You could have suffered a serious TBI and not realize it until days after the incident occurred.
