Most traumatic brain injuries that occur are mild, such as a slight blow to the head resulting in a concussion; however, when someone suffers a severe TBI, their life, as well as the lives of their family and friends, can be drastically altered. Medical bills that accompany a severe TBI can be astronomical and a complete change in life is usually required. The injured party may require long term help to perform daily activities.
Many brain injuries are related to motor vehicles collisions or impacts. This includes car, truck, motorcycle, and bicycle collisions, as well as pedestrians who are hit by vehicles. It also includes train, bus, and Metro crashes. A motor vehicle TBI can be caused by a direct blow to the head or by sudden acceleration/deceleration alone. You don't have to actually have hit your head to suffer a TBI.
If you or a loved-one are suffering from the side effects of a concussion, or post concussion syndrome, don't be ashamed to seek help. Neuropsychological tests can determine if you suffer from PCS. Behavioral and cognitive therapy can reduce symptoms and address specific deficits. Education can assist both adults and children to manage their symptoms and return to normal activities.
Paul has represented victims of drowning and other pool injuries beginning 1994, when he successfully sued a pool operator in the District of Columbia for the wrongful death of a young child. Inattentive and poorly trained lifeguards, and improper supervision led to this tragedy.
Sadly, most sports or recreation related TBI could have been prevented. Many state have now enacted "Zackery Lystedt Laws", named after a Washington State middle school football player who returned to the game after suffering a TBI. Later in the game, he suffered a second TBI, this time suffering catastrophic brain hemorrhage. The legislation that his case generated requires that athletes under the age of 18 must be removed from practice and/or a game after sustaining a concussion, and are not allowed to return until they have obtained a written return-to-play authorization from a medical professional.
